Spirit Health believes that education is the best way to empower people to take control of their health and more easily manage their conditions. They provide a variety of accessible online courses that educate people about medical conditions that they have been recently diagnosed with. EMPOWER is a sub-brand under Spirit Health that specialises in helping patients understand their diabetes, how they can manage and even reverse their condition.
Spirit Health wanted to create, EMPOWER, a brand that would sit next to theirs and the NHS nicely but also have its own distinct look whilst not looking out of place. They needed a brand that was confident, friendly and informative, a brand that can be digested and understood by a literacy age of 9-10 years (the average in the UK), and would also be picked up by those whose english is not their first language.
In terms of design, we were careful to consider people with visual impairments and colour blindness. We made sure that the design held its own without clashing with other branding or causing design clutter. We made use of lots of white space to allow patients to easily take in the information, using flat simple animation to ensure nothing felt overwhelming.
We had scope to redesign the EMPOWER logo, colour palette and image style, but Spirit Health wanted to keep their existing typefaces to match the parent brand, therefore we created a brand that respected this.

It was great to know that something we were working on will help so many people to understand and manage their health better. One of our favourite parts was taking something that felt so complex to begin with and transforming it into an educational course that can be understood clearly by a wide range of people
The brand helped clearly communicate the message and information that EMPOWER wanted to share with its patients, allowing them to better understand the diagnosis and feel a little less alone in it.
The EMPOWER brand strongly reflects their why message, built on the importance of education, and is well tailored to their key audiences. It is accessible to a wide range of literacy levels.
The brand itself has been applied consistently across all touch points for a professional look, this is reflected in the course app, and there is potential to build further brands within Spirit Health in a similar fashion.
