Our aim was to create a clean, friendly user experience that enables Rohan's customers to find the right garments with ease. The design is simple and unobtrusive, letting the quality of the clothing speak for itself.
Before. Rohan's website was cluttered and old-fashioned in terms of design, so cleaning up the UI was a priority.
The old CMS was clunky and difficult to use. The internal Rohan team relied on their own dev experts to make updates to the site. One of their goals going into the project was to be able to make content and catalogue updates without dev expertise. The BigCommerce platform provides an easy-to-use CMS that makes this simple.
One of the key criteria in Rohan's use cases was the ability to buy online and pick up in store (BOPIS). The BigCommerce platform had just released its BOPIS API, so we were one of the first agencies in the UK to integrate the BOPIS API with a Stencil theme.
Designing for all viewports is essential, so we created a beautiful UI that works responsively on all devices.
He / him. Tom is a pioneer of technical solutions and unrivalled "edge case thinker". If you have a problem, chances are he saw it coming, and can write some code to fix it. As Technical Director, he oversees all the nerdy work we do, as well as getting beard-deep in the coding of advanced web and app development projects. Powered by the Raspberry Pi in his pocket and genetically descended from a cat, Tom is a 3D printing, statistic loving, real ale drinking, blimp drawing legend.
She / her; red / blue. Mel is a writer, editor and designer. Equally happy hiking a muddy trail as playing tabletop roleplay games by candlelight. Will seize any opportunity for a party, as long as said party features copious food, prosecco and hits from the 1980s. Her true passion lies in words. A student of literature, she is fascinated by enduring myths, etymology and science fiction. Kurt Vonnegut is her hero. “We are here on Earth to fart around, and don't let anybody tell you different.”
He / him. Paul is a tech lover. One of Rusty Monkey’s developers, he spends a lot of time playing with gadgets, and loves trying to fix broken tech. He’s an eco nut. Loves nature. Amateur triathlete, and an even more amateur musician. Plays too many computer games. He dreams of living in a futuristic utopia where we all get on and have a lovely time. Be excellent to each other.
She / her. Sigita is the latest addition to the Rusty Monkey development team. Even if she is new to software development waters she dives deep in and learns as much as she can to be able to swim with the sharks. Sigita loves travelling and exploring new places! Her new hobby is painting-by-numbers which lets her decorate all the boring white walls at home. Her guilty pleasure is watching TV series and she loves Spanish language as well as reggaeton music. She is a huge DOG lover but ironically, she keeps two cute pet rats.
He / him. Moly has been a project manager for 20 years. He used to work in IT and business analysis, but more recently he's been enjoying digital marketing and agile transformation. The way to Moly's heart is through a Kanban board.
Moly is a music fan, classic car nerd and he loves to travel. He used to be in the Scouts and enjoys being in the mountains. His hobby is running a small electronic music festival at his old University in Bradford. If you've ever wanted to plan a road trip or go to a festival, Moly has probably got a Trello board kit list ready to go!
He / him; yellow. Creative jack-of-all-trades, Matt is "dangerously knowledgeable" in almost every facet of marketing. His favourite field is branding, and he loves developing inspiring, daring brand identities for organisations who are ready to do something different. But he's equally talented at front end web development and developing digital strategies. He's also the front man and guitarist in local parody heavy metal outfit Evil Scarecrow, plus a huge fan of music, eating in nice restaurants, and going on holiday.
Rohan are a well-loved highstreet outdoor clothing brand. They focus on the mature audience, who are looking for elegant garments that perform exceptionally well without being flashy. The brand is founded on providing quality outdoor clothing for mature explorers, developing behind-the-scenes fabric technology that gives the wearer a flawless experience.
The goal was to migrate Rohan's existing website onto the BigCommerce SaaS platform. BigCommerce offered a number of benefits over their old system, including an improved CMS experience that would allow the content team to make changes more easily.
Other benefits of BigCommerce included eliminating the need to purchase and maintain server hardware, greatly reducing out of hours support and worrying about server uptime, as well as allowing scalability at busy times by leveraging content delivery networks.
BigCommerce also allowed us to edit the checkout experience, which was important for the BOPIS functionality and other customisation.
We wanted to design a UI that better represented Rohan's brand. The old website was cluttered and old-fashioned, so we designed a UI that is clean, fresh and deceptively simple - just like their clothing.
The BigCommerce platform gives Rohan much more flexibility to update their website content without involving their technical team, making it easier and faster to change the catalogue, add new content and scale up.
The team involved our UX/UI designers - Matt and Mel - and our clever dev team - Matt, Tom, Sigi and Paul. The project was run by project manager Chris Molyneux (Moly) and product owner Mel.
As Rusty Monkey were providing front end development, we worked very closely with Rohan's own technical team, who were in charge of the back end.
“If someone came to me asking if they should work with Rusty Monkey, then to me that’s a definite yes. It’s a no-brainer. [Rusty Monkey] exceeded all our expectations and delivered above and beyond what we originally set out to achieve.” —Jane, Rohan
A sleek, fresh user interface, and a robust platform with a user-friendly CMS that will support the Rohan brand and products into the future. The project was delivered in a tight 5 month window to coincide with an important promotion.
