RESEARCH: Our most important task at this stage was finding an animation style that feels modern and futuristic while still keeping in touch with Luxfer's brand. It needed to be able to translate complex technical information in a relatable and aesthetically pleasing way in order to inspire the viewer.
SCRIPT: Next we worked on developing the script for the animation, getting our brains together to figure out the best way to inform the audience while keeping the flow of the piece simple and engaging.
ASSET CREATION: Once the script was laid out, we had all the information needed to know what assets to create. We built the bus, hydrogen system, backgrounds and each scene from scratch in Blender.
6 SECOND SAMPLE: We picked a few seconds from the storyboard to animate fully so that everyone gets a general idea of how the final animation will look like. This is the stage where we get feedback and make any final changes to the style before moving on to working on the bulk of the animation.
FIRST CUT: This is where we get our heads down and create a first version of the entire video. The first cut will then be open to feedback and final minor changes before moving on to actioning the feedback and delivering the final cut.
FINAL CUT AND ASSETS: This is where we amend the first cut based on feedback, and deliver a finalised video. Along with the video, we collate the assets and deliver those as well to be kept by the client and used in future projects.
She / her. Iulia is Rusty Monkey’s animation, illustration and 3D expert. Responsible for making everything beautiful, she also dabbles in graphic design and UX design. Among her credits is an animated music video for local parody heavy metal band Evil Scarecrow. A talented artist, she showcases her work on her Instagram channel. She usually spends most of her time in some random corner of the house with a drawing tablet and a pen, scribbling away. Cat obsessed. Professional house plant killer. Autumn lover. Maker of things.
He / him; yellow. Creative jack-of-all-trades, Matt is "dangerously knowledgeable" in almost every facet of marketing. His favourite field is branding, and he loves developing inspiring, daring brand identities for organisations who are ready to do something different. But he's equally talented at front end web development and developing digital strategies. He's also the front man and guitarist in local parody heavy metal outfit Evil Scarecrow, plus a huge fan of music, eating in nice restaurants, and going on holiday.
He / him. Chris is a co-founder of Rusty Monkey. Chris would like to think of himself as a branding philosopher but in reality it means that he can sit in his hammock and come up with great ideas around business and branding problems. He’s also a BBC-trained camera operator and has worked on many large scale TV events. A technophile. Loves the outdoors and will often head into the countryside with his wife, daughter and camera drone. Really interested in ethical thinking and business.

Luxfer are a leading producer of highly engineered advanced materials that help to protect lives, keep the environment cleaner, and make industry more efficient. We were tasked with creating an animation that would explain how bus hydrogen systems work.
Luxfer needed a simple, engaging way of explaining the Hydrogen Fuel System and how Luxfer hydrogen cylinders work within that system.
We opted for a 3D animation, and we built the bus and system from scratch which we also used in future animations. Choosing 3D animation can be a lot of work in the beginning, but it's a great investment for future projects as all assets created can easily be used in other animations.
Our creative guild, led by our animator, Iulia.
The animated video ended up generating lots of engagement and being very versatile - Luxfer used the video on social, on their website and even at events. The assets created in the making of this animation were used for future collateral too, such as banners, posters, adverts and brochures.
