To do our best work it’s important that we are philosophically aligned with the organisations that we work with. We want to work with people that we like, and have a clear purpose and a vision that we can believe in.

We are an agency born out of friendships, a group of misfits that wanted to have some influence and freedom and couldn’t find happiness working for other people.

We didn’t believe in treating people as cogs in a machine. We didn’t feel valued in deep hierarchical management structures. We rejected dictatorial authority. We were (relatively) poor, living in a small market town without many opportunities.

All of this led to us coming together to create a space where we could be our authentic selves and try to drive our own destiny.

We have made mistakes and our journey has been long and steady. We see this as a gift to help us be better, care more, understand ourselves and find a sense of purpose.

We believe in partnerships, in collaboration, in friendships, in kindness.

We believe in giving our team space to do work that they find exciting and fulfilling, and enabling them to pursue their dreams.

We believe in breaking all the conventions and structures that make work boring, restrictive and stressful.

“We want to be an agency built on friendships with an unrelenting desire for us all to have influence and create work that has meaning. In many ways, that’s our vision. Rusty Monkey should be a place that our younger selves wouldn’t want to leave. We never wanted to work for 'the man' so we definitely don’t want to be 'the man'.

It should be a place that gives young people great opportunities, a place to follow some kind of dream and purpose. We would always love that purpose to be within the agency, but Rusty Monkey could equally be a place to bring together passionate young people who want to create friendships, find their creative or technical passion and act as a springboard for their preferred destiny.

We aim to create a culture that collaborates and heavily embraces everything new. Just like we have had to do time and time again. A place where young Matt can pick up creative work, be artistic, maybe even do something music related - or at least earn the free time to explore that side passion.

We want it to be a place where everyone can be their true selves and all have influence over their destiny.”

We're a collective of cool creatives with loads of marketing and technical knowledge based in Nottingham's vibrant Creative Quarter.

For the resource-starved marketing manager (or business owner) Rusty Monkey empowers you to be brave, entertaining and different, improving your communication and technology through creative and technical solutions.

We want our customers to feel inspired, heard and entertained.

The relationship works best when we understand budgets and goals and help work alongside the organisation to deliver those goals.

We have experts in marketing, design, branding, video production, animation, writing, web development, ecommerce, automation and apps.

We can do everything from helping deliver a full marketing strategy to offering simple graphic design services and deliver everything in a pro-active way.

We are the agency that loves to ask "why?" so that we can help evaluate any piece of work that we do together.

If you’re looking for video production, then understanding its purpose and what it aims to achieve will really help get the results that you’re looking for.

Our mission is to transform organisations into fun, exciting brands that push boundaries and demand attention.

Our approach to work is based on flexibility, adaptability and challenging the status quo.

Whatever industry you're in, and whatever your goals are, we will challenge you to think bigger, go further and be braver.

We focus on building relationships and working towards long-term goals. We work hard to develop trust and give our clients the confidence to take a leap of faith.

We have three main routes of engagement, projects, retainers and billing agreements. You can read more about them below.

We work with Agile and Waterfall project management methodologies, which allow us to be forward-thinking but also agile and responsive to change.

Consider a retainer if you need ongoing support. This type of contract is particularly suited to online marketing services. Our hourly rate for a marketing retainer is the most cost-effective, and it’s the best solution if you will have a lot of regular work for us to help you with.

Our most popular way to work is on retainer. Most of our customers are working with a budget and trying to do something. Allocating part of their yearly budget to us helps us meet their KPIs.

The budget is spread out monthly and we allocate time across our team of experts to help deliver results.

It helps with cash flow, keeps budgets under control and we always carry forward any unspent time. You get great value as you’re buying our time

With our marketing retainer, you pay a fixed amount each month, agreed between us when we set the agreement up. This buys you an allocation of hours that we can spend working on your project.

Great for:

  • Ongoing improvements to your business

  • Ad hoc development and continuous improvement to your website

  • Regular content creation such as video and graphic design

  • Online marketing, content marketing and SEO

  • Paid advertising management

  • Marketing campaigns

  • Graphic design work

  • Any small creative or nerdy things

A project is ideal for achieving a standalone goal. You might want a project if you need a new website, an animation, a video or some branding work. Projects take place over a set period of time with a specific due date. We will agree the project value before we start and issue invoices at pre-determined milestones.

Our retainers are great for ongoing improvements and goal hitting. Projects for us are tied to a deliverable. A good example is a website, video or animation project, which often comes with its own budget.

Projects bring our customers great value because they focus on a fixed product and aim to deliver it by a certain date to set budget.

Great for:

  • Web development

  • Video projects

  • Branding projects

  • Brand and marketing strategies

  • Workshops

  • App development

  • Single marketing campaigns

For ad-hoc services, billed at our hourly rate.

Some customers love flexibility and, for those that we have worked closely with, we can offer a billing agreement. These work similar to a retainer agreement in the way that we manage work - monthly cycles of review and planning - but we simply bill our time at the end of each month.

Great for:

  • Flexibility

  • Reactive work and managing peaks throughout the year

  • All types of reactive work and ad-hoc requests

  • Single marketing campaigns

We work with Agile and Waterfall (which we like to call WAgile) project management methodologies, which allow us to be forward-thinking but also agile and responsive to change.

We favour a collaborative approach to projects.

We use a combination of Scrum and Kanban agile approaches, as well as more traditional waterfall style. We call it WAgile.

We know our clients usually want to work to an agreed timescale which is why an element of top-down waterfall planning is useful, in order to set people's expectations.

Using the Iron Triangle (time, cost and quality) we agree with you on the most important framework for the project.

Collaboration and working together are critical and will yield the best outcomes.

For projects, you can expect us to work in weekly cycles of work, or Sprints, driven by the team doing the work who will take responsibility for the outcomes.

For retainers, the sprint cycle is usually monthly.

We'll need your input at every stage as Product Owner, and as such we'll regularly check in with you to ensure work is understood; and when it is produced, to ensure it fulfils your expectations.

Expect us to refer to the Agile Manifesto and Scrum Values, opposite:

Agile manifesto

We value:

  • Individuals and interactions over processes and tools

  • Working software over comprehensive documentation

  • Customer collaboration over contract negotiation

  • Responding to change over following a plan
